Restoring a single piece of content without replacing the live database

wordpress, backups

Recover one damaged page, post or media item with the narrowest suitable method so newer live content and business records remain intact. WordPress revisions, Trash and a separately restored backup each solve different recovery problems.

01 Choose the recovery source

  • For an unwanted edit, inspect the item's available revisions and compare the text you want to recover.
  • For a deleted post or page, check Trash before using an older backup. An item permanently deleted or removed after the retention period may no longer be there.
  • For deleted files or data outside revisions, restore an appropriate backup into an isolated location and extract only what is needed.

02 Recover and review a revision

  1. Open the affected item in WordPress and locate its revision history if available.
  2. Compare the relevant versions and note any recent changes that should be retained.
  3. Restore the chosen revision, or copy the required passage into the current version when only part should change.
  4. Check the current title, status, permalink, featured image and plugin-specific fields before saving or updating.
  5. View the public page and verify links and layout after clearing the relevant cache.

Does a revision contain every setting?

Do not assume so. Core content and supported revisioned fields may be available, while plugin data, uploaded files and other relationships can have separate storage. Inspect the recovered item rather than treating one restored revision as a complete historical site snapshot.

How can an old backup help without overwriting new orders?

Restore it to a protected test installation, with outgoing mail, payments and scheduled actions disabled or sandboxed. Locate the missing content there and transfer the specific text, media or supported export into the live site. Avoid copying whole database tables for one page because those tables can contain many unrelated records and relationships.

03 Verify identifiers and media

A re-imported item may receive a new ID, and its media links or menu references may need correction. Test links from other pages and preserve the original public URL when appropriate. Keep a fresh live backup before the repair and document what was transferred. If recovery requires custom plugin tables or transaction records, ask for a data-specific plan instead of substituting the older database wholesale.
