Creating a virtual service product in WooCommerce

wordpress

Use a virtual product for a service or other item that does not require physical shipping. The Virtual setting removes shipping requirements for that item, while the product description and your fulfilment workflow explain what the customer receives after paying.

01 Define the service clearly

Describe the scope, expected delivery process, required customer information and any scheduling arrangements. State what is included and how revisions or follow-up work are handled. A standard virtual product does not automatically create a booking calendar, recurring subscription or project-management workflow.

02 Create the service product

  1. Open Products > Add New and enter a descriptive service name.
  2. Select the suitable product type, commonly Simple product, and enable Virtual.
  3. Set the price and the tax treatment required by your confirmed store configuration.
  4. Leave Downloadable disabled unless the purchase should also grant access to an actual file.
  5. Add a clear description, short summary and relevant image, then configure any capacity or purchase limits you actually need.
  6. Save as a draft, preview and test checkout before publishing.

Does Virtual mean the order is automatically fulfilled?

No. It describes shipping requirements. A service can still need manual work and an order-processing step. Orders containing products marked both virtual and downloadable have different automatic completion behaviour from an ordinary service, so test the actual product configuration rather than assuming every virtual order completes immediately.

Why does checkout still ask for an address?

Billing details may still be needed for payment, tax or customer records. A mixed cart containing a physical product will also require shipping. Removing every address field through custom code can break gateway or tax behaviour, so change fields only through a compatible, justified configuration.

03 Verify the post-purchase experience

Complete a sandbox order and read the customer email and order page. Confirm that the buyer knows the next step and that the responsible team receives the order. If the service requires an appointment, subscription or special intake form, configure and test the appropriate supported extension separately. Keep customer submissions private and avoid asking for sensitive credentials in ordinary order notes or email.
