Some Node packages include native components compiled for a particular runtime and operating environment. Copying node_modules from a different machine can produce an incompatible binary.

Gather the details you will need
Capture the first meaningful installation or load error and record the Node version, operating system, CPU architecture and package version.
01 Troubleshoot a Node native dependency build
Check whether the package provides a compatible prebuilt binary for the target environment. Confirm its supported Node versions before attempting a compiler workaround.
Install from the reviewed lock file on a compatible build system. Avoid uploading native dependencies built for another operating system or architecture.
If compilation is required, confirm the necessary supported compiler, Python and system libraries are available. Shared hosting may not permit installing those system dependencies.
Keep build scripts and downloaded package sources within the project’s normal trust and review process. Do not use an unknown patched binary simply to bypass an error.
Build a clean release, start the application and exercise the feature that actually loads the native module.
02 Example: compare the Node environments used to build and run
Using the Node executable that actually builds or runs the application, collect this nonsecret runtime fingerprint on both systems:
node -p "JSON.stringify({node:process.version,platform:process.platform,arch:process.arch,modules:process.versions.modules})"
Compare the Node release, platform, architecture and module ABI with the package's supported builds. Differences help explain why a copied native dependency fails to load. A matching fingerprint is useful evidence, but system libraries and the package's own native requirements can still differ.
Reinstall the reviewed locked dependencies in a compatible build environment and exercise the feature that loads the native component. Do not solve a binary-format or ABI error with broad permission changes, an unknown downloaded binary or a global runtime replacement.
Confirm the expected result
Confirm the package loads under the production Node runtime and performs its real operation. A completed npm install does not prove every optional native feature works.
If the problem continues
After a runtime upgrade, rebuild or replace incompatible native dependencies. If the required toolchain is unavailable, use a compatible package release or a hosting environment that supports it.
A common question
Will changing file permissions fix an ABI mismatch?
No. A binary compatibility error needs a matching build or supported runtime. Permissions matter only when the error specifically concerns access or execution.
