A virtual private server provides a virtual server environment with an allocated resource plan. It can support workloads that need more control or separation than an ordinary hosting account. The exact access, software and administration responsibilities depend on the service agreement.

01 Separate resources from management
CPU, memory and storage describe capacity. Managed support describes who maintains particular parts of the server. They are separate questions. We offer managed VPS options, but you should confirm the operating system, control panel, access level and included management tasks for your order.
- List the applications, databases, background jobs and traffic expected on the server. Include storage growth and a recovery requirement.
- Check the proposed resource allocation and whether a future resize or migration needs downtime.
- Confirm supported operating systems and licence costs. A control-panel trial is not an indefinite paid licence entitlement.
- Ask who handles operating-system updates, firewall changes, application patching and incident investigation. Record any application work that requires a separate agreement.
- Review backup and snapshot coverage, retention and restoration access. Keep an independent recovery copy for important data.
- Confirm the initial access method and credentials-delivery process. SSH access does not automatically include root privileges.
02 Example: write a useful VPS requirements brief
For an application with a website, database and background worker, send us a brief such as: We need a supported Linux environment for our application, one database and a continuously running queue worker. Our current peak memory, CPU and storage measurements are attached. We need a tested restore procedure and want confirmation of which operating-system and application tasks your team manages.
Include your required runtime versions, expected storage growth, existing traffic measurements, source location and acceptable maintenance window. Describe whether customer uploads and new orders must survive a rollback. Ask for the relevant licences, backup retention and management responsibilities in the proposal.
This provides a basis for sizing and service selection without pretending that one fixed VPS specification suits every application. Keep the accepted scope with your account records so later support requests can refer to the actual agreement.
When is a VPS a suitable choice for my application?
It may suit an application with particular service dependencies or a workload requiring greater isolation and control. A small website that only needs standard PHP hosting may be easier to operate on a managed hosting plan without taking on server-level decisions.
03 Prepare for operation
Assign an owner for renewals, updates, monitoring and recovery. Test login access, application availability and backup restoration after delivery. Record authorised administrators and remove access that is no longer needed.
A VPS is not automatically highly available across multiple locations. If your business requires a specific recovery time or redundancy design, describe that requirement to us and obtain an appropriate architecture and service scope.
