Renaming or replacing the default Uncategorized category

You can rename Uncategorized or choose a different default post category. WordPress requires a default category, so it will not let you delete whichever category currently holds that role.

Should I rename Uncategorized or replace the default category?

Rename the existing category if all of its posts should belong to one new topic. Choose a different default and redistribute posts if Uncategorized contains mixed content. The default is a fallback for posts without another category; it should not be used as a substitute for reviewing editorial organisation.

01 Rename the existing category

  1. Open Posts > Categories and edit Uncategorized.
  2. Change the name to a useful label. Review the slug separately; changing a public archive URL may require a redirect from the old address.
  3. Save the change and check an associated post and the category archive. Existing assignments remain attached to the renamed category.

02 Replace it with another default

  1. Create the category you want to use, or confirm that it already exists.
  2. Open Settings > Writing, select the new Default Post Category and save the settings.
  3. Review posts in the old category and assign more appropriate categories where necessary.
  4. If the old category is no longer needed, return to Posts, Categories and delete it. Review the reassignment outcome and any links to the former archive.

03 Verify new and existing posts

Create a draft to confirm the new default behaviour, then discard the draft if it was only a test. Inspect existing posts separately because changing the default does not intelligently categorise your entire archive.

If the delete action is absent, recheck which category is currently selected as the default and confirm that your account can manage categories. A theme may cache a category label, so verify the saved administration value before troubleshooting the public display.
