Understanding how your domain, DNS, website and email fit together

Your domain is the registered name people use, while hosting runs the website or email service behind that name. DNS connects the name to the relevant services. These parts can be purchased from one company or managed by different providers.

01 Identify the four responsibilities

  • Registration: keeps the domain registered and records its registrar, contact details and nameserver delegation.
  • DNS hosting: publishes records that direct website, email and other traffic.
  • Website hosting: serves the site's files and application.
  • Email hosting: receives and stores messages for the domain's mailboxes.

A domain purchase does not automatically include a finished website or business mailboxes. Likewise, an active hosting account cannot prevent a separately managed domain from expiring.

02 Connect a domain to hosting

  1. Confirm that you control the domain and can access the current registrar or authorised DNS manager.
  2. Obtain the connection instructions for the exact hosting service. Decide whether you are changing nameservers or only specific records.
  3. Inventory existing mail and other records before changing delegation. Preserve the services that must continue working.
  4. Add the domain to the destination hosting platform where required, then publish the instructed DNS values at the authoritative provider.
  5. Configure HTTPS and test the website. Test email separately if its DNS records or nameservers changed.

Do I need to transfer the domain?

Usually, a domain can point to hosting without changing registrar. A registrar transfer changes who manages registration and renewal; a DNS change alters where services are reached. Choose the action that matches your goal.

Can I build before connecting the name?

Many workflows support a preview or staging address, but its availability depends on the service. Test the site there or through another supported method, then arrange the final domain connection. Keep an inventory of registrar, DNS provider, hosting service, email provider and renewal owner so future changes are easier to plan.
